TM
(Transverse Myelitis)

TM (transverse myelitis) is an inflammation of the spinal cord that results from damage to nerve cells. Back pain is often the first symptom, along with extreme sensitivity to touch.

Many people need to be hospitalized for the initial attack of TM.

There is no cure for TM, but there are treatments to prevent or minimize permanent neurological damage.

Symptoms

TM usually begins with rapid development of symptoms over several hours, days, or a week. Symptoms typically include lower back pain, weakness in the legs and arms, sensory symptoms like numbness or tingling, pain and discomfort, and bowel or bladder dysfunction.

TM occurs in both adults and children.

Recovery

Treatment for TM includes medications and rehabilitative therapy. Most patients receive steroid treatments to reduce inflammation and swelling. Other treatments include high-dose intravenous immune globulins (IVIG), plasma exchange, pain medicine, antiviral medication, and medication to treat other symptoms.

The healing process may take months or years. Some patients recover with minor or no residual effects, while others may suffer permanent impairment.

Cause

TM may occur following viral or bacterial infections, especially those associated with a rash, spinal cord injuries, or immune reactions.

Vaccinations are another possible trigger for TM.

Related disorder

  • MS (multiple sclerosis) is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord.
  • ADEM (Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis) is a rare neurological disorder that involves inflammation in the brain and spinal cord.
